One of our Saturday morning 10/9/2016 activities is the Jane Austen’s Quilt-and English Paper piecing workshop with Lorna MacKenzie
Saturday 10th September 2016 10.00-12.30.
LIMITED to 10 participants, please advise if you are interested.
Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra were accomplished seamstress, sewing the household linens, trimming their bonnets and gowns. They both enjoyed the creativity of English paper piecing, a form of quilting still in use today, with it they created a beautiful patchwork coverlet that outlived them both. In May 1811, Jane asked her sister Cassandra, “... have you remembered to collect pieces for the Patchwork? — we are now at a standstill!" Made at the time Jane was writing Emma and Mansfield Park, as well as revising Pride and Prejudice, the patchwork now hangs in Jane Austen’s former home in Chawton, Alton, Hampshire, England.
In this workshop Lorna will walk you through the creation of Jane and Cassandra's coverlet and introduce you to the pleasures of English paper piecing, it's a pastime that you can take with you everywhere and can become quite addictive! You will learn how to create the three main shapes in Jane and Cassandra's patchwork quilt, a hexagon, a diamond and a rectangle, once you have mastered these simple techniques, you can go onto create your own version of Jane and Cassandra's patchwork quilt.
Requirements: Attendees need to know how to hand stitch.
Resources required:
Hand sewing needles, thread that matches your fabric, pins, snips, fabric scissors, a few different coloured/patterned cotton fat quarters or fabric cotton scrapes, a couple of sheets of light weight paper, printer paper is AOK, a sheet of firm cardboard or template plastic, lead pencil, pen, notebook. Fabric colours to choose are those of the Regency, pastels, small prints, etc.
